This artwork is inspired by the Story of Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) an ancient Hindu legend that is closely connected to Balinese culture. The story tells of Garuda, a powerful mythical bird and the son of Winata and the sage Kashyapa.
Winata once became a slave to her sister, Kadru, because of a trick. Wanting to free his mother, Garuda agreed to obtain Tirta Amerta, the sacred water of immortality. Through his courage, strength, and determination, Garuda succeeded in obtaining it. His devotion to his mother made him a symbol of loyalty, courage, and sacrifice.
Afterward, Garuda became the vehicle and loyal companion of Lord Vishnu, the Hindu god associated with protection and preservation. This is why the famous GWK statue in Bali depicts Lord Vishnu riding Garuda. This artwork representing strength, devotion, and the preservation of life and harmony.
